This self portrait was painted three years after William Dobell arrived in London as recipient of the 1929 New South Wales Society of Artists Travelling Art Scholarship. Prior to painting this work, Dobell had visited Holland and studied. Rembrandt and Van Gogh in 1930, and travelled to Belgium to study the work of the Dutch masters in 1931.

Sep 09, 2008 · Whats amazing to know is that this work was taken to the supreme court, because people were complaining that the work wasn't a portrait! but of course Dobell won in the end because the court ruled that if the gallery believed it was a portrait, it was a portrait!
