WILLIAM MARPLE (b. 1827, New York–d. 1910, Aspen, Colo.). Born and bred in New York, William Marple was attracted to California by the Gold Rush of 1849, establishing himself in Placerville before removing in 1866 to San Francisco, where he devoted himself to landscape painting.
