William Mason Brown was born in Troy, New York, and began his artistic career while still a teenager. At fourteen years of age Brown was employed by Thomas Grinnell, a local ornamental painter, and later studied portraiture under Abel Buel Moore.

William Mason Brown (1828 - 1898) Brown was born in Troy, New York, on the eastern bank of the Hudson River. In the 1840s he first studied with Troy landscape artist, Thomas Grinnell and later with portraitist, Abel B. Moore. In 1850 he continued portraiture with Moore in Newark, New Jersey.
