The artist earned a reputation as one of the premier portrait painters of his day. Paxton received his first medal in 1901, then there were the awards in 1920, 1922, 1928, 1930, 1931, 1935. Paxton received a scholarship to the Cowles School of Art at the age of 18, in 1887. Two years later he left for Paris to study at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts.
