William Ralph Turner was a self-taught artist very much of the Northern School of painters. He was born in Manchester on the 20th of April 1920. During the 1960s Turner visited the famous Tib Lane Gallery in Manchester and saw an exhibition of works by L.S.Lowry.

William Ralph Turner, born in 1920 was the last of the great Northern Industrial painters who belonged to the Northern School of artists influenced by L.S. Lowry and which included Alan Lowndes, Theodore Major, Roger Hampson and Harold Riley. Lowry followed a personal vision, little influenced by the works of other painters.
