Bill Sutton taught at the School of Fine Arts at Canterbury University for 40 years. He was granted a lifetime membership to many art societies around New Zealand and was made a Companion of the British Empire in 1980 for his services to art. He died 23 January 2000 in Christchurch.

He was a 'Canterbury' man – born in Christchurch and, except for some brief periods away, lived here all his life. Bill Sutton found the landscape of the region endlessly fascinating and it provided a lifetime's source of subject matter.

William (Bill) Sutton claimed that he 'had no desire to create or recognise national totems'; but his paintings of the Canterbury landscape have certainly been seen as expressing regional, if not national, characteristics. Like many of the Christchurch painters of the 1930s and 1940s, Sutton often placed buildings or man-made objects against the landscape.

During the 1940s and 1950s Sutton followed in the tradition of fellow Canterbury artists, such as Rita Angus, Colin and Rata Lovell-Smith and Louise Henderson, developing a distinctive interpretation of the Canterbury landscape.
