William Ralph Turner, born in 1920 was the last of the great Northern Industrial painters who belonged to the Northern School of artists influenced by L.S. Lowry and which included Alan Lowndes, Theodore Major, Roger Hampson and Harold Riley. Lowry followed a personal vision, little influenced by the works of other painters.

Turner's work is more and more widely collected and is in the collections of Sir Peter Ustinov, Sebastian Coe, Eddie Shah, Freddy Pye, Stockport Art Gallery, Saab Motors, Manchester Education Committee and throughout the world. William Turner died on June 10th 2013 at the age of 93.

The bridge at the right of the sketch is probably Blackfriar’s, which stands near to Manchester Cathedral (in Turner’s day, the Collegiate Church; folio 34; D25702).The church towers beyond may be those on the Salford side of the river, perhaps Trinity Church, and St Stephens.

William (Bill) Turner was born in 1920 in Manchester in poor circumstances. Although William Turner’s work is often bracketed with Lowry’s, he was greatly influenced by the French and German Expressionist schools, and his paintings are more vibrant and vigorous with a strong use of colour which lightens his often industrial subject matter.
