Oct 04, 2020 · Urushibara Mokuchu was born in 1888 with the given name of Yoshijiro in Tokyo. He had studied woodblock printmaking . As a young man he had the chance to go to London with a group of craftsmen for demonstrations of the Japanese 'mokuhanga' technique at the occasion of a British-Japanese exhibition in 1910.

Urushibara's best work was a group of floral woodcuts of which this is a notable example. The artist moved to England at a young age and lived there as well as in France until 1934. During this time, he took the artist's name Mokuchu which was used in some of his seals.
